Economic freedom is essential for a nation?s prosperity and growth. And it is no less critical for individual states. While the many negative consequences of government intervention at the federal level have been well documented, the impact of this intrusion at the state level has received much less attention. PRI?s U.S. Economic Freedom Index: 2004 Report provides a ranking of America?s 50 states according to their level of economic freedom. It examines data on more than 140 policies measuring five types of government intervention in markets: fiscal, regulatory, judicial, size of government, and welfare.
