After the arrival of the packet, we were detained a day for the mails. The passage of the boat was bad, owing to contrary winds : it had been confined three days in the Apulian part of Gallipoli. However, time will pass on, whether agreeably or disagreeably occupied, and, strange to tell, although I hated the town, and the people were odious to me, I felt a sort of regret or qualm of uneasiness at leaving even Otranto, considering the present as the first step to the " descensus averni" of the East. It was leaving the Europeans for the Mahommedans and the Greeks: throwing myself amongst a people to whom I was an utter stranger: and though the Italians have their faults, yet I was not to expect amongst the modern Orientals the same fine qualities, the same ingenuity, nor the same excellence and proficiency in the arts, as amongst the vivacious and wandering inhabitants of the former mighty republic. Curiosity, however, the strongincentive to action, the main-spring of our research after knowledge, and the stimulus of all our anxious inquiries into the darkness of futurity, reconciled me to the change, and I called to mind an observation of Voltaire, saying to myself, if I do not see pleasanter scenes abroad, I shall at least witness new objects and new faces : a people of another religion, with other manners and other morals: a rac...
