In our twenties, we all face a rite-of-passage to break free from the dependent thinking necessary in youth to gain the independent thinking required for a fulfilling adult life. Avoiding this journey results in remaining focused on authority approval and peer opinion rather than taking control over one's personal development. In the book, author Trevor Schmidt begins with the inevitable results of quitting the challenge. A Lost Focus Depression which leads to vampire like actions-starving for external rewards when there are none within the self. This then results in perpetual anxiety, boredom and sadness. Dependent's contract marriages like a three-year car lease and form friendships that feed off of each other's problems and pessimism. However, by completing the rite-of-passage we gain the courage to act with integrity, and the skils to solve our own problems and thus the liberty to live by self-approval alone to create our own destiny by hunting growth for the nourishment of happiness. Independent's earn the communication and connection skills to form interdependent pair bonds and friends team-hunt fresh perspectives like a pride of lions.
